Reflections on how fear shapes our decisions — and what becomes possible when we stop…
Why Walking Barefoot Feels So Good (And What’s Actually Happening)
Earthing Isn’t Just About the Ground — It’s About Returning to Your System
There’s a reason walking barefoot—especially on the beach—feels noticeably different in your body.
Most people attribute that to the ocean, the air, or simply being outside.
But part of what’s happening is more direct.
Your body is in contact with the earth.
I hadn’t thought much about this in a structured way until recently, when I came across some of the research on what’s often referred to as earthing or grounding.
What stood out to me wasn’t just the explanation.
It was how familiar it felt.
What Earthing Is and What the Research Suggests
Earthing, or grounding, is the practice of making direct physical contact with the earth’s surface—typically through bare feet on grass, sand, soil, or stone.
The theory is that the earth carries a subtle electrical charge, and when the body comes into contact with it, there may be an exchange that helps neutralize excess free radicals.
Some research has associated earthing with:
- Reduced inflammation
- Improved sleep
- Lower stress levels
- More balanced cortisol patterns
Research in this area is still developing, but the consistency of reported effects has made it an area of growing interest.
What I Found Most Interesting
What stood out to me most isn’t just the biological explanation.
It’s how quickly the body seems to respond.
Most people don’t need the science to recognize the effect.
They feel it.
A shift in tension.
A slower breath.
A sense that something in the system is settling.
And that’s where this becomes more interesting than just another wellness concept.
The Nervous System Piece
For many of the women I work with, there’s a constant level of activation running in the background.
Not always obvious.
But present:
- holding decisions
- managing complexity
- carrying responsibility
Over time, that state becomes normalized.
What’s interesting about something like earthing is how quickly it can interrupt that pattern.
Not through effort.
But through contact.
It introduces a different signal to the system—one associated with regulation rather than activation.
Why This Matters
We often assume clarity comes from thinking more.
In many cases, it comes from a regulated nervous system.
When the body is more settled:
- processing improves
- decisions feel clearer
- responses are less reactive
From this perspective, earthing isn’t really about adding another practice.
It’s about restoring a baseline the body already understands.
A Simple Way to Try It
There’s no real protocol here.
A simple starting point:
- walk or stand barefoot on natural ground
- even a few minutes can be enough
- no specific technique required
The key variable is direct contact.
If you’re someone who likes to understand the science behind what you feel…
I recently came across a documentary called The Earthing Movie that explores this more deeply.
You might find it adds another layer to what your body already knows.
